A recent (1996) book is William James and Stephen Johnson <Doin' Drugs:
Patterns of African-American Addiction.> I think your best bet is going
through the many ethnographies especially of the 1950s. As far as oral
histories go, I have found David Courtwright, et. al. <Addicts Who
Survived> and Bill Hansen, et. al. <Life with Heroin> the best. Have you
thought about fiction? Claude Brown <Manchild in the Promised Land> is
both stunning and infinitely informative.
