In 1989 a student of mine then known as V. Padmavathy completed a dissertation
on English barmaids. More recently she also has done some preliminary research
on the Indian expatriate community in North America. I want to provide her
this introduction because (1) her name has changed to Padma Manian and (2) she
has moved from a teaching job at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse to live in
the San Francisco area. Perhaps some subscribers may be interested in an
alcohol researcher who knows Tamil and Hindi (as well as late Victorian and
Edwardian England).
