Let me recommend to one and all bookmarking Hans Olav Fekjaer's "Virtual library", now accessible in English as well as "Scandinavian".  The address is http://www.bks.no/biblio.htm
    It contains about 500 research-based reports, papers, books, etc.  "The main topics are use, harmful consequences, motives for use, policy, and treatment".  Alcohol, other drugs and gambling are covered. There is some material under "history".  Robin Room
