Please excuse a non-scholarly response, but I'm reminded of a salient portion of a Willie Nelson/Waylon Jennings song, "Reasons to Quit":

The reasons to quit // Don't outnumber all the reasons why.

The song (like the scholarship) provides a laundry list of "reasons to quit," but nowhere does the lyricist feel the need to itemize the "reasons why"--it's assumed we already know why.
