The program committee of the American Historical Association has accepted the
session, "Prohibition in Cross-Cultural Perspective" for the AHA annual meeting
at New York City in January 1997. The ATHG will co-sponsor the session. The
session will be chaired by Lilian Lewis Shiman (Nichols College, Mass.), while
the commentators will be Geoffrey J. Giles (University of Florida) and Patricia
E. Prestwich (University of Alberta). There will be three papers: "The Decline
of Prohibition in English Politics, 1895-1921" by David M. Fahey (Miami
University, Ohio), "The Alcohol Question in British West Africa" by Charles H.
Ambler (University of Texas at El Paso), and "Sobering Up the Revolution:
Prohibition and Temperance in the Soviet Union, 1921-28" by Kathy S. Transchel
(University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill).
