It seems to me that the more salient issue here--more than the expansion of the franchise to women--revolves around the impact of the First World War.  Nonetheless, I am a European historian, and perhaps this was not so much the case in the U.S.  I would be interested in hearing the comments of other listers on this most interesting subject.
