I can share my limited personal experience.

As foolish teens, some friends and I got into snorting snuff. The stuff we
used was in very fine powder form, and a pinch placed on the junction of
your thumb and forefinger was the preferred spot to begin your "snuffing".
The desire to sneeze is very difficult to control, and almost everyone I
ever saw do it sneezed heavily at least the first few times they tried it,
but this response is controllable after a few times. It also burns, and
often makes the eyes water with the intense burning. This may be similar
to coke users, I'm not sure. There is no immediate rush, but I admist
there was a healthy dose of "macho" going around, to see if you could
"take it like a man". This may be needless to say, but I think we got sick
of it after our first tin ran out (several weeks, maybe, no more than a
couple of months). Every now and then for a few years, I would try and
find snuff to purchase, and it is almost never carried anywhere, at least
not here in Minnesota or Wisconsin. I'm not sure where we found a place to
buy it in the first place, maybe a head shop.

As for health effects, a runny nose was common, and I would find
interesting particles in my nasal discharge, which was at least as
disgusting as it sounds. There might be more, but at the time I was also a
regular cigarette smoker, so they may have been masked.

snuff

Hi,

My students had a question about the health effects of snuff (inhaled,
dried tobacco). Are there any negative health effects of inhaling
snuff? Why isn't it more widespread?
