ATHG COLLEAGUES: The following post occurred on the soc.history
newsgroup I follow. It's in response to a previous question regarding
the origins of distillation in Europe. I repost it FYI. Ron Roizen

Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland) has a bottle of ~ scotch that has
been dated to 665AD...If it's alcohol production you're looking for,
and not just distilled alcohol, the Celtic druids were doing it in 3000
BC.

Try contacting Boston Univ. School of Hospitality Administration... for
a long time they offered a class on Wines & Spirits (Prof. Ed Kelly)
with a lot of historical content... BU also offered a class entitled
"Alcohol in History" - it always closed out the first day of
registration. Try contacting the BU College of Liberal Arts to get the
Prof's name & number...

Good luck!
