Emil Bacik and I returned to the fields and wetlands of the greater Magee region this morning, hoping to better calculate the sheer number of waterfowl using this area at the moment. W. Touissaint North Rd, northeast of Benton-Carroll Rd is hosting some 11,000+ ducks, geese, and swans right now, and this spectacle is certainly worth a gander. Heading Benton-Carroll south from SR 2, take a very sharp left on W. Touissaint North Rd. (third crossroad). You will need to pull to the side of the road, and scope the birds at a bit of a distance; this is apparently a Ottawa NWR property. Darsch Rd. at SR 2, also a ONWR parcel, is hosting nice numbers of dabbling, and some diving, ducks at fairly close range. Waterfowl totals (Ottawa Co):
Greater White-fronted Goose 1
Canada Goose 1400
Tundra Swan 810
Wood Duck 33
Gadwall 300
American Wigeon 680
Mallard 9900
Northern Pintail 2080
Green-winged Teal 195
Northern Harrier 2
American Woodcock 6 displaying wonderfully along the Magee entrance road
Great Horned Owl 1 Magee
Metzger Marsh and ONWR's Veler Rd. are hosting good numbers of common waterfowl, as well.
Good birding -
