Been out a few times to Crown City WMA and Anderson Meadows in hopes of Short-eared owls.. CCWMA has had a good number of Northern Harrier; (6) the first visit and (9) the next. American Woodcock have made their presence known as well.

A few highlights of the New Year thus far:

01.02.22- During the Huntington CBC, my group found what would be the first January record Blue-gray Gnatcatcher for Ohio & West Virginia in a small gulch along the Ohio River, just south of the Indian Guyan Boat Ramp.

Other highlights of the our count effort include:
(3) American Black Duck
(1) American Woodcock
(1) Sharp-shinned Hawk
(1) Peregrine Falcon
(4) Winter Wren
(3) Fox Sparrow
(1) Brown Thrasher (CW)

01.04.22- Today’s visit to Anderson Meadows did not disappoint. Will attach the ebird checklist at the bottom. Several American Woodcock were peenting and doing their aerial displays, had a flyover flock of Wilson’s Snipe, (1) Short-eared Owl all within 15 minutes of each other just before 6pm. I would’ve liked to have gotten there a little earlier in the afternoon. Sparrows numbers are usually great here, but only had 1 American Tree Sparrow, and on that I was unable to identify. (13) Purple Finch were nice to see. I got some decent shots, will upload them to ebird checklist in the coming days.

I’m hoping to hit the January 100 this year.
Here’s to a great 2022 to all!

Good birding,
