Doug,
I tried with all my might to make it a Tufted Duck, but I can't.  The bill pattern looks good for Ring-necked.  As does the white "spur" on the forward flank and grayer flank panel behind it.  Also the tail seems grayer rather than blacker.  I see no hint at all of a tuft, not that it always shows on Tufted Duck.
Intriguing - thanks for posting.  And would be glad to hear what others may reply.

Larry Jeanblanc took some pictures of an aythya duck in Old Reid Park in
Clark County on 10/26/17. It looks odd to me. I have posted the pictures on
the Clark County Audubon website at www.clarkcountyohioaudubon.org. I would
like any comments on this bird. It mostly looks like a Ring-necked Duck but
there are some odd things about the bird.

Thanks for any comments.
