This morning at The Firestone Yeagley Wildlife Area, at about 11:25AM, my wife Denise and I relocated this years Sandhill Crane family, after not seeing them for over a month. Mom, dad, and the two colts were easily seen in the wetland to the east from the parking lot on Depot Road (CR410). The colts were hatched back about May 4th, and first found by Peter Wilson. On the following day, Peter, Denise, and I, were able to photograph the whole family, including the couple day old, little bitty, butterscotch colored, bundles of joy. On this same day, May 5th, a bonus was, that we also found Columbiana Counties second record of Glossy Ibis near this same location. This years two colts should now be about 5 1/2 months old. As far as I know, this is the only Sandhill Crane family in Columbiana County and the neighboring counties. My wife Denise and I, first found Sandhill Cranes, a pair, here in the Spring of 1998, on April 3. They have been found here annually each year since, usually from late March to mid November. During this time period they can sometimes be found from the dam at Guilford Lake east to Gamble Road, and from Teegarden Road and Salem Reservoir south to SR172. Their normal isolated and out of sight nesting area is south of eastern Sell Road in the marsh locally referred to as Tritten's Pond. Photos from today can be found on my e-bird report. Unfortunately, about 11:50AM, gunshots could be heard from the northeast, spooking the Sandhills. They flew off to the southeast.
