Susan Jones, Karin Tanquist, Pat Coy and I, had a fabulous day at Killdeer Plains
February 23. A list of birds follows. The highlight bird was the Northern Shrike. The Short-eared
Owls were out in force by 4 p.m., along with Northern Harriers. We watched a harrier harass an
owl to get the owl to drop its catch. It appeared neither got the meal that the owl dropped. Here's
what we had on a sunny Saturday:
Red-tailed Hawk
American Tree Sparrow
Horned Lark
Snow Bunting
Canada Goose
Rock Pigeon
Baled Eagle
Northern Harrier
Song Sparrow
Mourning Dove
American Robin
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Northern Cardinal
Dark-eyed Junco
Rough-legged Hawk
Northern Shrink
Tufted Titmouse
Blue Jay
Pileated Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
House Sparrow
American Crow
Long-eared Owl
Short-eared Owl
American Kestrel
Tundra Swan
Mallard
American Black Duck
Eastern Meadowlark
