Actually, Turkey Vulture numbers seem near their peak in central Ohio as
well, with big roosts now at several traditional spots. I had 75+ birds at
O'Shaughnessy Dam almost a week ago, 60+ birds near the Cremeans Water
Plant along the Big Walnut in northeast Columbus 3 days ago, and 160+ birds
up at Twin Bridges on the northeast side of Hoover Reservoir 2 days past.
The Twin Bridges birds started coming in around 4 PM and their swirling
masses were quite cool and a bit creepy to watch, our own little version of
Hinckley.
Particularly interesting is the good #s of Black Vultures that seem mixed
into these groups. Most of these groups had 3-6 Black Vultures, but the
Twin Lakes swarm had 12+. I also found 18+ Black Vultures with a group of
24+ Turkey Vultures down at Osprey Lake along the lower reaches of Darby
Creek, a spot that looks to be very reliable for them.
