Emil Bacik and I were joined by Mike Busam this morning at Huron Pier. There
were very few gulls within the harbor and surrounding lake, but a first-yr
Glaucous kept us company out at the lighthouse throughout our vigil. A
third-cycle Lesser Black-backed was also present on the river, and we relocated
the ad. Franklin's on the way out - downriver behind the River's Edge Inn.
On to Lorain Harbor, where we were greeted by one of the most incredible gull
concentrations I've seen here recently. Among 3500 Bonaparte's, we were able to
pick out a single ad. Little Gull and a leucisitic Bonaparte's, a la the E. 72nd
St. bird of last winter. We moved to the pier on the east side to view the 1200
or so Bonaprarte's hanging just outside the harbor, and Jen Brumfield replaced
us on the west side of the river. None different were detected among this
flock, but a juv. Pomarine Jaeger came winging in from the east, before heading
due north and out of sight. Around the same time, a swallow blew past nearly in
front of my face - a Cave, certainly! But no, none other than a foolish
Northern Rough-winged Swallow wheeled about the pier before heading into the
impoundment.
Following our departure, an excited Jen Brumfield phoned to report that the
jaeger was now making passes within and just outside the harbor, and in its wake
she had discovered, as well as photographed, an ad. BLACK-HEADED GULL! More
details to follow, I'm sure...
