After some massive arrivals of passerines this past week things are finally happening with waterbirds. The cold front had instigated the first arrivals of Common Loons and Horned Grebes — with half dozen to a dozen of each at scattered sites offshore Huntington Reservation, Cahoon Park, Rocky River, Lakewood, Edgewater. Bonaparte’s Gulls have arrived in good numbers in western Cuyahoga County lakefront sites, with nearly 800 between Cahoon Park east Rocky River and Lakewood. All three scorers have been recorded in the past two days, mostly flyby flocks. Common Terns are staging as well. I had a dark immature Pomarine Jaeger pass Huntington this morning, pushing east. Two days ago, a Jaeger species (likely Parasitic) moving past Rocky River Park. Waterfowl diversity is picking up as are numbers. Pintail, Redhead, scaup and Red-breasted Mergansers are back and building.
