Birders,
After shovelling the drive twice during the day I needed a birding break and
took a walk around Berea - Coe Lake, Baldwin and Wallace Lakes as well as
wooded area along the east branch of the Rocky River. The snow on the trees
and bushes was amazing the walking was difficult due to average snow depth
of 9 inches. It was later in the day between 3:30 and 5:30 PM, but here is
what was seen, nice surprises are in bold:
Canada Goose 67
Wood Duck 3 (2 males, 1 female)
Mallard 366
American Black Duck 17
Scaup sp. 1 (female)
Hooded Merganser (1 male, 1 female) on Rocky River
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
American Coot 2
Killdeer 1 (looking very unhappy)
Herring Gull 1
Mourning Dove 2
Belted Kingfisher 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker 6
Downy Woodpecker 7
Hairy Woodpecker 3
Blue Jay 2
American Crow 3
Black-capped Chickadee 7
Tufted Titmouse 3
White-breasted Nuthatch 3
Carolina Wren 1
American Robin 5
European Starling 4
American Tree Sparrow 16
Song Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco 1
Northern Cardinal 6
Red-winged Blackbird 4 (males - all singing)
Common Grackle 12
Brown-headed Cowbird 2
House Finch 7
American Goldfinch 1
House Sparrow 7
