Hello All,
Sorry for the late post. The Eared Grebe (found yesterday by Brian Menker
and posted by Doug Overacker) was easily found at about 10:15 AM today in the
extreme Southwest corner of the reservoir where it was seen yesterday. Upon
driving West across the dam on the Robert Eastman Road, park at the far end of
the parking lot and climb the stairway. You will see a tall concrete tower, and
the grebe was actively feeding just South of this tower, often near the
shoreline. Other nearby birds included several American Coot, a pair of Lesser
Scaup, and a handful of flying Bonaparte's Gulls, one in nearly full breeding
plumage. The CJ Brown Reservoir is located NE of Springfield, Ohio. See page 66
of the Ohio Atlas and Gazetteer.
At the N end of the reservoir, using the Grant Road access, the American
White Pelicans, reported there a few days ago, were not found though they could
have been out of view on the West side of a peninsula or a couple of islands.
The Lake level is quite low, providing extensive flats, though no shorebirds
were found.
On our return, we birded Hoover Reservoir, hoping that this cold front had
brought along some new birds, but waterfowl were very scarce at all checkpoints,
as well as gull numbers. A pair of Osprey was easily found from the Galena-area
boardwalk at the N end (the bird with some dark breast feathers has a band on
each leg), as well as 5 Northern Rough-winged Swallows that were flying/foraging
to the South.
Good Birding,
Dan
