Fellow trapped birders,
A Level 3 snow emergency has left me, and many of you, trapped at home
counting yard birds, a fact well documented on this listserve. The up side
of that is the 40 SPECIES OF BIRDS I saw in the "yard" yesterday. That's
when I define the entire 60 acre farm as the yard. When I limit it to the
6 fenced acres, it only 30, with Rusty blackbird, Fox sparrow, Brown creeper
among the best. A walk in the woods turned up ten more, including EASTERN
PHOEBE, actively hunting in a snow storm, in the wetlands part of the
place. A year bird, to say the least.
The down side of being trapped out here was not being able to get to
Somerset for the paper and a doughnut. One of the many hardships of
living deep in the woods. I'm suffering mild withdrawal, not really helped
by the arrival of one single House Sparow this morning for a weekend total
of 41, so far. But, it looks like the doughnut number will not change, and
that is a tough burden to bear.
If a doughnut does show up, I'll be sure to post it here, and dress it
up with a few bird reports to make it legal.
