Chimney Swifts: Nature's Imperiled Avian Insectivores

October 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We've all seen Chimney Swifts, those cigar-shaped birds twittering and
flitting high in the air over central Ohio. You may have heard that they eat
prodigious quantities of mosquitoes (go swifts!). You may even have seen
hundreds of them spiraling into chimneys here in the Columbus area. But what
do we really know about these birds of summer? And what dangers to they face
here in Ohio and elsewhere?

Please join us as we welcome Judy Semroc, who discuss Chimney Swift life
history, nesting requirements, benefits and our human impact of this unique
and beautiful species. Judy also will share ideas on how people can invite
and help this species to visit and even nest on their properties. Think of
them as being the natural way to keep mosquitos at bay!

Judy Semroc currently works in the Natural Areas Division for the
<https://www.cmnh.org/> Cleveland Museum of Natural History as a
Conservation Specialist. She is the founder of Operation Botanic Rescue, a
volunteer plant rescue group, Quail Hollow Land Conservancy and Chrysalis in
Time, the first Ohio chapter of the <http://naba.org/> North American
Butterfly Association (NABA). In 2013, Judy was the recipient of the
Outstanding Staff Achievement Award for the Cleveland Museum of Natural
History. Along with Larry Rosche and Linda Gilbert, Judy co-authored the
popular field guide Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio in 2012.
As a former Petroleum Geologist and science teacher, Judy loves to learn
about and share her passion for the natural world through hikes,
interpretive programs and photography.

Fund to help her spend a week at the camp on Hog Island this past summer.
