On Sunday, October 16, 2011, Tom Behlen, Pat Hayes, and myself conducted the
14th October monthly census on Kelleys Island. We started the day with
10-15 mile per hour winds out of the south-southeast, 54 F, and overcast
skies. These skies soon turned to rain for most of the census. Even with
the weather, we had an excellent day ending with 59 species and 3904
individuals. The species count was above the 14 year average of 58 species
but the individual count was well below the 5343 average. New species for
the October count were Philadelphia Vireo and Tennessee Warbler. Unusual
species were a late Cape May Warbler and Ovenbird. Surprising misses were
Great Blue Heron, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Mourning Dove, Gray Catbird, and
White-crowned Sparrow.
