Tom built it himself. If he had had someone build it, he would have 
written "/Tom spent //his summer weekends at his lake cottage that he 
had had built in 1995." (/Of course, if that is indeed the meaning, he 
could just as easily have written,  instead, /"Tom spent his summer 
weekends at his lake cottage that he built in 1995."
