Pat Hayes, Paula Bartlett, and I conducted the 13th August Kelleys Island
census today. Weather was typical but the island appeared to be fairly
quiet. 58 species were observed which is slightly below the 13 year average
of 62 species. However, the 5256 individuals is almost double an average
count for August. Again, gulls seem to be up in numbers. New for an August
census were Northern Pintail, Rock Pigeon, and Hermit Thrush. Missing
species usually observed were Belted Kingfisher, Common Yellowthroat, and
Brown-headed Cowbird.
