The immature little blue heron that was spotted at Berlin Lake Wilderness
Area by Kent Miller on July 26 was still at the pond today when I stopped
by around 1:00. I've copied his directions below, which helped me find
the spot. The only thing I would add to his directions is that there are
two unmarked parking areas along this stretch of road. You want to use
the northernmost one.
To reach this poorly marked spot, take Rt. 225 north from Alliance. Between
German Church Rd & Fewtown Rd, there is a small, unmarked parking area on
the east side of 225. From the parking area a 2-track gravel road heads
east running underneath a high tension power line the whole way (an osprey
nest sits on one tower). You will pass a pond on your right and then come
to a second pond that is full of dead trees that are home to red-headed
woodpeckers.
